Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) are two other examples of coronaviruses that originated in animals and then spread to people. This is suspected to have occurred for the virus that causes COVID-19.

Rarely, coronaviruses that infect animals have emerged to infect people and can spread between people. Some cause illness in people, and others, such as canine and feline coronaviruses, only infect animals. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses. There are many types of human coronaviruses including some that commonly cause mild upper- respiratory tract illnesses. This new disease, officially named Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) by the World Health Organization (WHO), is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. We are grateful for this opportunity to address how each of our agencies and offices are harnessing innovation to prevent, diagnose, and treat the novel coronavirus SARS- CoV-2.ĬOVID-19 is a new disease, caused by a novel (or new) coronavirus that has not previously been seen in humans. It is an honor to appear before you today to discuss the Department of Health and Human Services’ Operation Warp Speed efforts and the Department’s efforts on vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics.
